Claughton House
The three-bedroom villa, designed and built by the late Geoffrey Bawa stands on five acres of undulating coconut plantation giving the visitor a spectacular view over the immediate and neighboring bays.
Claughton is one of Bawa’s great works of art, designed with great attention to details, giving the guests an uninterrupted view of the beautiful landscaped garden that runs down to the sea from every bedroom, living and dining room.
A freshwater swimming pool built ingeniously into the rocks overlooking the sea is just perfect, not only to laze around in but have you meals served there as well, if you wish to do so. With this in mind, a barbeque area is available if you desire to indulge in one on a starry night.
The house, with a split-level dining and living area in an open-plan style, benefits from the natural fresh air, making it the perfect place to relax with a book or to have those pre-dinner drinks/cocktails, and for that after-dinner game of Scrabble or Yahtzee.
The three bedrooms in the main house are two twin rooms and one Master Suite with air conditioning and ceiling fans, includes tea/coffee making facilities plus a fridge, hair dryer and an electronic safe for your valuables.
Each room also boasts of its own private courtyards, equipped with an open-air shower with hot and cold water in addition to the luxury of en-suite bathrooms with bath and shower. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms although the lounge area is built away from the house for those who wish for such facilities. Wi-Fi internet is also available.
Fresh seafood – shrimps, lobster, fish and crabs are readily available and the cooks will prepare it just to your liking either in Sri Lankan Curry form or if you prefer it, in Western style. There is no set menu, each meal is discussed with the guest and not only prepared accordingly, but each individual may request a personalized dish.
Barbeques are a specialty of the house and the owner takes a special interest to produce a sumptuous Barbeque by preparing it himself. If one is not possible by the side of the pool due to bad weather, you could enjoy one in the eastern pavilion (which is situated close to the house) where guests may also have the option to be served other meals of their choice.
Breakfast options are available from Western, American or continental to the various Sri Lankan specialties like hoppers, egg hoppers, honey hoppers (prepared at your breakfast table) to string hoppers and coconut rotty with traditional accompaniments.
